The Birmingham–Jefferson Convention Complex is another great landmark close to our community. This sports, convention and entertainment complex includes numerous exhibit halls, meeting and ballrooms. This large complex features three entertainment venues: an arena, concert hall and theater. And for the major sports enthusiast, Legion Field, a stunning outdoor stadium is primarily used for football and is referred to as the “Football Capital of the South” or the “Old Gray Lady” by the locals. Legion Field also hosts other sports events including lacrosse and rugby and some exciting concerts by notable bands and performers. For some great outdoor family fun The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a 67.5-acre garden located adjacent to Lane Park at the southern foot of Red Mountain. The gardens are home to over 12,000 different types of plants, 25 unique gardens, more than 30 works of original outdoor sculpture, and several miles of walking paths. Or there’s always the Birmingham Zoo, home to almost 800 animals representing over 200 species, including many endangered species from six continents.
For those seeking to further their education, our location to some of the South’s finest colleges is one of our greatest assets. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, is a school of remarkable growth in size, quality, reputation and impact. In a little more than four decades, UAB has transformed from its modest beginnings as an extension center into a doctoral research university and academic medical center. Birmingham-Southern College is located three miles from downtown, a four-year, private liberal arts institution founded in 1856 and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The Alabama School of Fine Arts is a public, partially residential high school located downtown. It provides career, college preparation, and technical education to students from grades 7-12. The school offers specialty programs in creative writing, dance, mathematics and science, music, theatre and visual arts, plus a distinguished core academic program.
If you like minor leagues baseball, then you will love Park Place which is close to Regions Field home of the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League. It also serves as the second home field along with Jerry D. Young Memorial Field for the UAB Blazers. Regions Field is located adjacent to the Railroad Park, just south of downtown Birmingham.
